all quiet   2004-06-20

we didn't end up going to the beach ... too windy and not very sunny. but tuesday is a national holiday and we're heading somewhere to do something with brian and juno. hopefully we'll see a monkey riding a boar bareback.

it's been a quite few days for me. other than a few one-on-one sessions with my adult students i haven't been teaching. i can't say i'm broken up about it ... but everyday not working means a day spent here without making money. lying on my bed the other day in the sweltering afternoon heat i was thinking about writing a mission statement and taping it to the fridge. you know ... to keep focused. but i couldn't recall if we had any tape plus it meant moving which meant sweating so ... i'll wait until i can't sleep one of these nights and strike when it's cooler.

i really want to make every day count while we're here. on those days when "the pit" threatens to climb out and spoil the day it would be nice to just turn my head ... look at the fridge ... and remember why we're here.

i'm starting an adult class at panasonic next week. i'm heading to their turf to mix it up in a boardroom for three hours a night on monday and wednesday nights for a couple of months. i have no idea what i'm going to do with 10-15 business people at the end of a long day. it might mean learning some drinking games. you can get kids to run around and touch their noses and stuff like that no problem ... but blank faced suits? the panasonic coordinator mentioned there was going to be a "range" of english comprehension in the group. trouble. that spells boredom for some ... maybe terror for others ... and most likely confusion for all. good thing i brought a tie from home. i may have to wow them with devastating good looks and a handsome polyester tie.

"Ooooh goodness- Reading your last entry makes me think of when I first started teaching in Taiwan- but I arrived during Chinese New year, so I had months and months of sitting on my rear! But summer is a coming and all I can say is- Cherish the days where you can lie on the bed and stare at the fridge because soon your time will not be your own! Its going to belong to all the summer K-1 classes which can be hell to teach! But soon you'll have so much money you will just have to go on vacation to reduce the amounts of zeros in your bank account. It really is the life to live once you are settled and past the first six months of culture shock... Melanie M"

"The pit - ohh ohh woah the pit - the pit and the pendulum. Gotta keep the devil way down in the hole. Hats off to you two walking the perimeter and throwing your fate to the currents of a distant land. It's inspiring to me (and others I'm sure) less brave, sitting here in the cool comfort of a beautiful dead end.
Lots of love
Lee"

"The last year in Taiwan, I needed focus. My motivation was a big thermometer on my closet door. Everytime I sent money back home to Canada, I got to color in the amount. Seeing all that red made me get my butt outta bed in the morning and trudge off to school. Also, I surpassed my goal by the seventh month..... - Rene"

"thank you for letting me feel just a little like a voyeur, as i periodically check in on the Hutzulak journal entries. it's always nice to be the fly on the wall as I watch(read) your lives unfold way over there on the other side of the planet. I miss you guys but i can just picture the people, places, smells and wondering about just what sort of polyester tie, stylin Todd would pull off.
love ya lots
Cindylou"
